Opening Night: .RETRIBUTION.

The land hums as a farmer tramples into her grasslands, silently waiting. Something ghostly and hungered slips through the darkened hallways of a prison and snatches an unsuspecting guard. An ancient being is disturbed from his slumber by the gas drilling rig. Bile rises from the earth, acidic and rotting, swallowing an entire city whole.

Experience a night of terror, rage, and retribution, featuring readings from Blak writers from across the continent. Horror will be appropriated and re-imagined as Indigenous self-determination is projected back onto the settler gaze. Careful, coloniser. Many things go missing in the night. You might just be next.

Please note that performances at this event will contain material that may be upsetting or distressing for some attendees. Artists will give a content warning before they perform. These performances will contain mention of the following: blood and mild gore, offensive /coarse language, death and violence, two deceased First Nations characters, cultural breaches of Wrong Skin Law and subsequent punishment by a Law Person (non-graphic), marijuana use, body horror, graphic depictions of blood, violence and medical trauma

I’m Whitney, Formerly incarcerated Transgender artist and photographer, writer with a passion for storytelling through my words & lens. My journey hasn’t been conventional, I take pride in the unique perspectives I bring to my work and life. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Art with a double major in Sociology & Public Relations. As I continue to build a new future for myself, I remain committed to using my art and experiences to uplift those around me. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next, lets celebrate the beauty of transformation through creativity.

I am a Gooreng Gooreng Storyteller with interests in poetry, theatre and film practices with kinship ties spanning from Guugu Yimithirr Warra to Jawoyn Nations. Currently living, learning and working on Arrernte Country.

moirra. (he/him/hir; xe/xer/xers) is a Yorta Yorta, Boon Wurrung, and Jewish transsexual poet, writer and artist living on Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung Country. Xer work explores Blak Queerness and Queer Blakness, disability and madness, and relationality to Country, our Ancestors, and community.

Samara-Jade Sendek

Before becoming the deadly sistergirl the fascists fear, Samara-Jade was born out in rural Australia. She then had a heart attack before discovering dresses with pockets. Now, she is a freelance writer and narrative designer for video games. She still does MMA on the side, in between delivering talks and writing gothic fiction.

Zarah Yakubu

Zarah Yakubu (They/She) is an emerging writer and poet of Trawlwoolway/Palawa and Mwaghavul/Sura (Nigerian) heritage from the reputationally mysterious but tangibly quaint and monotonous north of lutruwita/trouwunna/Tasmania. They live and work on the Wurundjeri Country and are undertaking a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing at RMIT. She has been published in Mascara Literary Review, Splinter, Island and others.
