This year, EWF refreshes its look not only with a new suite of festival events and new festival artwork, but also with a brand-new logo.
This new logo reflects our evolving community, our core values and our vision for future festivals — all while paying homage to our 20+ year-long history. This new organisational logo was a major collaboration between our team, festival designer Selena Repanis and independent studio in Mexico, DUM DUM STUDIO.
The Vision
Selena Repanis has been designing for the Emerging Writers’ Festival for our previous two festivals, bringing her aesthetic expertise to each different suite of events every year. Selena knows our festival inside and out, as a designer, as a member of the EWF community and as an event attendee. With this in mind, our team could think of no one better to help us envision what the future of EWF might look like with a brand-new logo.
The unifying element of the logo — the typing cursor which runs through the ‘i’s of each word — is a callback to a previous EWF logo from 2018-2021, honouring our past while looking forwards with a fresh new look.
The Execution
To execute this new look, Selena and our team turned to DUM DUM STUDIO, an independent design studio based in Mexico. DUM DUM STUDIO provided the team and Selena with the font to execute exactly what they were looking for.
Selena Repanis’ implementation of DUM DUM STUDIO’s typography here oscillates between weights, in a font with already curved and varied edges. This gives the words the appearance of ink that contain itself within a single letter, or words that are only just now coming into focus for the viewer. These are things which reflect the nature of EWF’s community — outpouring with new creativities each year and constantly morphing to meet the new worlds we find ourselves in, and of course always emerging in one way or another.
Selena’s impeccable design work, met with DUM DUM STUDIO’s offerings, have made for a new logo which reflected EWF’s past, present and future as our team enters a new festival period.
